PERSISTENCE OF THE VACUUM WITHOUT GROUNDING DEFINITIONS BY LUKAS MARXT

Persistence of the Vacuum Without Grounding Definitions is a survey of the industrial landscape of the Russian harbour city Murmansk and the surrounding Arctic tundra. The film serves as both documentation of the city and an investigation of spatial and temporal perception, depicting its urban environment as a multi-layered object through decisive use of angle, frame and narrative. Despite the visible productivity of processing plants, cargo and consumerist billboards, Lukas Marxt’s film makes the city feel alien. The murmurous soundtrack coupled with the constant haze of smokestack industry creates a void between the observer and the surreal urban landscape, while the vertical format of the film adds to a feeling of disorientation.
